Day 1020 of Theresa May’s premiership: And still no Brexit in Sight
It’s tough, being a Brexit reporter these days. No news on the Brexit file to speak of other than Theresa May pops up occasionally to issue a statement on Brexit that sounds like this; “We’re still working on Brexit, and there’s no reason we couldn’t have a deal to Leave the EU within days.”
Except that the years, months, weeks and days are ticking past and not one thing has happened on the Brexit file other than a lot of gassing-off by politicians about how they intend to ‘deliver’ Brexit.
In a week or two, expect yet another pronouncement from 10 Downing Street with a similar message to the one above, “We’re still working on Brexit, and we could have a deal soon,” or some other roboticised version of it.
Every week is the same. Nothing changes.
Everyone in the UK carries on in a dreamlike trance as if Theresa May actually intends to deliver Brexit someday (fools!) even though proof is to the contrary for almost 3-years now. Can you say, “Stockholm Syndrome”?
(In case you’ve forgotten, Stockholm Syndrome refers to the psychological effects among a group of hostages, who begin to feel a psychological alliance with, and actively begin to help, their captors)
Yes, Theresa May is holding Britons captive by endlessly promising to deliver Brexit — but with no intention at all of delivering it because Brexit is what The People want — and as long as they continue to want it she’ll continue to dangle that carrot in front of them.
And when that no longer works because the majority of Britons have turned against Brexit on account of the economic uncertainty that TM and her band of Remainers have created due to the overly-extended Brexit ‘negotiating period’, she’ll find another carrot to dangle in front of Britons thereby allowing her to stay in the top job even longer.
Yes folks, it’s all about ‘dangling whatever carrot will do the trick’ at 10 Downing Street these days.
Anything to stay in the top job! Because all Theresa May wants is a ‘job for life’ at Number 10 Downing Street. It’s all so Orwellian.
If you think I’m disappointed with ‘job for life’ May, you’d be right.
Day 1010 of Theresa May’s premiership: Still No Brexit
After lollygagging around for 1010-days, Theresa May has still failed to deliver any kind of Brexit for the British people who voted en masse to Leave the European Union on June 23, 2016, and not even an apology yet from the Prime Minister.
Almost 3-years since the referendum to Leave the EU; Not a word from 10 Downing St.
No Brexit, not even a BRINO (Brexit in Name Only) Brexit, no heartfelt ‘State of the Union’ speech to the public to explain why two Brexit dates had been missed, and no explanation for the billions lost due to the very extended period of economic and political uncertainty caused by Theresa May’s Brexit machinations.
Any British Prime Minister worth their salt would hang their head in shame for promising to deliver Brexit — or any major policy for over 1010-days — and then not deliver it at the last-minute (twice; once on March 29, 2019 and again on April 12, 2019) and do the honourable thing and resign.
Now that she’s missed two Brexit dates — not only should she address the nation on TV and take full responsibility for her failure to lead the country out of the European Union, she should also resign and leave politics, never to be heard from again.
Even that wouldn’t be good enough as she’s cost the UK and EU economies billions while she lollygagged, dithered, and even argued with herself for almost 3-years — which would be forgivable if she’d delivered a decent Brexit by April 12th — but as she didn’t (not even close!) she must leave politics.
Frankly, I’m surprised that there aren’t millions of yellow-vest Brexiteers demonstrating against the Conservative government, but maybe everyone is still in a state of shock over this betrayal of trust and the cost to the business community from the economic uncertainty caused by the protracted negotiating process.
Yet, if she were to leave now, she might receive some amount of forgiveness. But if she tries to stay-on and fight the next election even diehard Conservatives will vote for Labour just to get rid of her. It’s that bad, and from her ivory tower she just can’t or won’t see it.
You tried your best, Theresa, but you failed, and continuing to flog your Withdrawal Agreement / Political Declaration / Joint Instrument again and again, will only make them hate you the more. It’s over, Theresa.
One Bright Spot on the Horizon: The Brexit Party!
Nigel Farage, who was the founder of the UKIP Party, has now distanced himself from UKIP which, very unfortunately, attracted small numbers of intolerant and/or outright racist supporters and rightly received outsized and negative reportage in the UK media.
Nobody needs those kinds of supporters in the 21st-century. The world has moved past intolerance, and Nigel Farage has reacted appropriately in this matter.
Now, Mr. Farage has launched The Brexit Party with the objective of fielding the sort of candidates that represent their constituents well and keep their election promises as much as humanly possible — instead of the typical promise, promise, promise, and never deliver style of politics we’ve become accustomed to in this decade.

Day 1000 of Theresa May’s premiership & Still No Brexit!
1000 days have passed since Theresa May MP was appointed UK Prime Minister by her Conservative Party in the wake of former PM David Cameron’s departure from politics, and subsequent to his resignation, Theresa May triggered an election for June 8, 2017 — which the Conservatives won — but with a reduced number of seats in the House of Commons.
I think anytime we give someone 1000-days to accomplish a task (Brexit, in this case) and they can’t or won’t fulfil their promises, we must conclude that the person in question never had their heart in delivering on their promises, or that they’re too incompetent to deliver on them.

And frankly, I don’t care whether Theresa May didn’t deliver Brexit because she wasn’t serious about it in the first place, or whether she’s too incompetent to deliver it, or whether she didn’t deliver it because she hates the price of coffee — she’s got to go!
There’s no excuse good enough to keep someone in a job whose mandate was to deliver Brexit for Britons and who subsequently failed in that project for more than 1000-days.
Theresa May has failed Britons. It’s time for someone else in the Conservative Party to take the reins and deliver Brexit at the earliest possible date, or failing that rather low bar, deliver Brexit anytime prior to the next election. And if they can’t deliver on their oft-repeated Brexit promises (a major policy in their party manifesto) then they don’t deserve to be the government and voters should vote Labour into government at the next regularly scheduled election.
Theresa May’s desperation to stay in the job and continue to flog her quite obviously dead in the water Withdrawal Agreement / Political Declaration / Joint Instrument / BINO Brexit is looking a bit unseemly these days — and the next step beyond ‘unseemly’ is that her entire premiership begins to look like a ‘disaster’ retroactively from Day-1.
And that would be a shame, because apart from not delivering Brexit, and having a tin ear, and a bit of weird dancing, she’s done a pretty good job.
But the point is; She was hired on as The Brexit Prime Minister and now, at Day-1000 of her premiership, she’s failed to deliver.
I for one, am not willing to countenance another 1000-days of economic uncertainty, nor 1000-more days of Theresa May pretending to deliver Brexit without actually delivering it, nor another 1000-days of political paralysis throughout the European hemisphere. Nor am I willing to countenance another week of this needless turmoil. And neither should anyone else, IMHO.
Leave now, Theresa, with your pride intact — before your good work on things like the economy, on energy, on the NHS, and Universal Credit — gets lost in the maelstrom of your party tossing you from the PM’s chair.
Send us a postcard from the House of Lords where you’ll surely end up and where you deserve to be; But your time on the Brexit file must end. Three years of economic uncertainty is ENOUGH!
